Murder inquiry after fatal fire

Police cordoned off Sterling Gardens after Sunday's blaze

A MURDER hunt is under way after two men died in a flat fire yesterday.

Emergency services were called to New Cross on Sunday (June 29) at 10.10pm following reports of a fire in a block of flats.

After extinguishing the blaze in a ground-floor flat, firefighters discovered the bodies of two men, believed to be in their 20s.

Other residents from the block of flats in Sterling Gardens were evacuated.

William Moss, of nearby Chubworthy Street, said he was in his back garden when he heard an explosion.

The 62-year-old said: "The noise I heard was a boom, it sounded like a petrol tank had exploded.

"As soon as I heard that noise I knew something serious had happened.

"I rushed over with a bucket of water, the road was full of fire engines, police cars and ambulances."

The identities of the men have not been released as police contact their next-of-kin.

Detective Chief Inspector Mick Duthie said: "I am appealing for anyone who was in the area over the weekend who may have seen or heard anything suspicious to get in touch.

"I am particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen anyone near the premises."

Anyone with any information should contact the incident room on 020 8721 4155 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Guys thats just the way press has quoted him. I know i was there. He ran out when he heard the explosion. People nearer the flat that was on fire shouted for him to get water .He ran back to his home, had to find bucket and fill it up which knowing the water pressure here would have taken about 5 minutes. when he got out the police were there moving everyone clear and then the ambulance and fire brigade arrived.
