Armed police on standby at house
ARMED police were called after a mentally ill teenager left hospital and locked himself in his Gravesend house.
Elliott Street was cordoned off while negotiators talked to the boy who had gone missing from the mental health unit at around 11.30am yesterday (October 5).
Resident Vera Lloyd said: "The police were running down the road, they had helmets, boots and shields.
"They cordoned off the road on both ends and one neighbour even had to be escorted to his house."
Another resident who wished to remain anonymous said the night before there was loud music and visitors were coming to the property.
The resident also said he thinks a bottle was thrown at the police as he saw smashed glass.
The 17-year-old came out of his house of his own accord at about 3.30pm and he was taken into police custody.
He will now receive more medical treatment.
Chief Inspector Mark Harrison said: "Our aim was to minimise disruption to the local community and ensure the safety of the young man.
"I'm sure the large police presence will have had an impact on some residents and I would like to extend my sincere thanks to them for their cooperation.
"Everyone was very helpful and very patient.
"I hope residents will understand that when we are dealing with an incident like this we must be prepared for any eventuality and by having the correct resources in place it allowed us to resolve the incident peacefully and without anyone coming to any harm."

If he is known to be mentally ill, why was there no one with him?
Surely, a 17 year old, ( would not own his own home) without anyone else present?

They are saying he should be cared for, and not in the situation that arose.
